I LIKE THAT | METRONOMY – ‘OLD SKOOL’

After the somewhat criminally lacklustre response to their most recent album Love Letters, Metronomy are back with a new single ‘Old Skool’ to tease the release of their upcoming album Summer of 08.

The track is a funky masterpiece. It has this ridiculous vibe too it, that seems to reject the serious undertones that we are so used to expecting from the band, but teases the heartbreak that they have always portrayed so well. Opening on an extended quirky instrumental phase, it takes a moment to get involved. As soon as they first syllable from front man Joseph Mount is uttered, you are hooked. It’s a throwback to the style of the band we have come to love.

The track is definitely different to past releases. The nonsensical utterings of ‘yah yah yah’ throughout the latter half of the track, blended with the slightly more funk revival synth lines add a fresh touch to their sound. Yet, underneath all of this there is a clear relation to their Nights Out album that is so beloved. The reminiscing on a broken romance, the groovy but not quite dance vibes all remind you all too much of what it is that we have loved from the band.  With Summer of 08 set in for a July 1st release, we can only hope that Metronomy can keep the routine going for yet another stellar release.
