I WAS THERE | THE WAIFS @ MELBOURNE ZOO TWILIGHT, 30.1.16

After 25 years of music, The Waifs show absolutely no signs of slowing down. On Saturday the 30th they played to a sold out audience at the Zoo Twilights in Melbourne alongside Ruby Boots, who kicked off the night with her raw country style music that warmed the hearts of many in the audience.

As The Waifs entered, die hard fans and their young families showed no hesitation jumping off their picnic rugs, dancing and singing to their opening song ‘Come Away’. The set was filled with stories about The Waifs’ long career and the motivation behind their most recent album, Beautiful You. They suggested it was a celebration and reflection of their career, filled with the easy musical energy that has seen the band take their passion for performing to pubs across Australia. After playing one of my favourites ‘Falling In Love With You’ lead singer Vikki Thorn went on to say “and then we broke up” explaining that not everything in life works out for the best but is a lesson and worth remembering “or writing a song about”.

As the sun set over Melbourne Zoo and the fairy lights gleamed softly over the crowd, guitarist Donna Simpson mentioned that their next song was about missing home and the entire audience jumped to their feet as the start of a crowd favourite ‘6,000 Miles’ began to play.  As the set came to a close The Waifs couldn’t be more appreciative for the venue, audience and the love and support their followers continue to show.
The show they performed is a true reflection of the bands passion and the love for their fan base that keeps them playing.
